Concern for off shore drilling

To the Editor:

Like many Floridians, I am distressed at the idea of drilling for oil off the shores of Florida.

Having lived on an island dependant on crude oil as one of its major industries, I am well aware of the danger and degradation of many of its beaches. And this island rarely suffers a hurricane, although prone to earthquakes and tremors. What I am trying to warn Floridians about is to carefully consider the costs of replacing and replenishing oil contaminated beaches (no more white or any favorite swimming attire, and baby oil to be added to the beach bag in order to remove messy, black oil from the unwary.)

Comparing the present, steep price of gas, surely an indepth study should be made on the cost of not only erecting the rigs and pipelines in the sea, but of replacing them after a destructive hurricane; the efforts that will be implemented to protect our lovely beaches that are one of the main reasons Americans and foreign tourists flock to our state.

Florida is a beautiful state with a potpourri of people and cultures that blend and add extra holidays to our year.

Let us try to rectify the problems of “global warming” before Florida and the proposed oil wells vanish under the sea.

Enough, already

To the Editor:

At the June 17 City Commission Meeting, Lay Sister Zelda ( Caryl Berner) is now an ordained minister and was glad that the commission finally came to their senses so she didn’t have to sue. She wasn’t listed Sister Zelda last month on the agenda. Ms. Berner dangles sue, sue, sue, like a yo-yo to this commission. She proceeded to give the net worth in tapes according to her collaboration and do we get the point. No I don’t, and I doubt anyone in the Jewish Community would either.

Ms. Berner mentioned the film, The Garden of the Fitzi-Continis and that Mayor Capellini is Catholic and his name ends with a vowel. So does mine! The film is about the rise of fascism in Italy and a Jewish middle class family. To insinuate that an Italian American is a fascist is unconscionable. I got the point. As you said, some Jews did survive, many did not and you denigrate their memory when you take what happened out of context.

Recalls Deerfield of old

To the Publisher:

I appreciate you printing the article I sent to you about Deerfield pioneers. Please correct the fact that Mr. Clint Stewart was chief of police for the town of Deerfield for many years. Most people did not know his name but just called him “Chief”. Please correct that for the record. I do not remember what  Mr. Harry Collier’s profession was but I’m sure if you contacted Ray Collier he would be glad to help you.

Also,  Eloise Stewart and her mother Jackie are still residents of Deerfield and are walking history books of past history. If you don’t grasp information from the real pioneers they may not be here someday to share it with you.

I moved away from Deerfield many years ago when the friendly little town I grew up in became a big city. I have found another town similar to grow old in, like Deerfield once was. Everybody knows you and waves as they pass and always have time for a kind word.
