Looking forward to experiencing something new, my husband and I decided to try Jimmy the Greeks restaurant in Lighthouse Point.Don’t let the size of the restaurant fool you. This small establishment packs a big punch when it comes to food, variety and service.Jimmy the Greeks opened this January. Jimmy and his mother, Nina, are the creative geniuses behind the cooking and the recipes.
You may dine alfresco at wooden tables with large umbrellas to offer shade or you may choose take out or drive through. The drive through is a clever and unique idea. You may order anything on the extensive menu and you get it quickly. This is not Greek fast food. This is Greek food that is served fast.
We chose to enjoy the cool evening and dine outside. We tasted so many dishes it was hard to pick a favorite. We started with a sample of the steak fries, spanakopita, feta cheese wedges and tsaziki spread. The spanakopita (spinach pie) was delightful. Each flakey bite was filled with a tasty spinach and cheese combination that blended beautifully with the crispness of the phyllo dough. We nibbled on delicious wedges of feta cheese topped with olive oil and a Greek lemon dressing and finished our appetizers with their homemade tsaziki spread and grilled pita bread.Nina, Jimmy’s mother, makes her own yogurt for both the tsaziki spread and for a dessert creation. It is incredibly thick and creamy and some of the best tsaziki I have ever had.We also enjoyed a Greek salad, filled with ripe red tomatoes, lettuce, onions, Greek olives, peppers and feta cheese. It was served with stuffed grape leaves and a lemon and olive oil dressing. It was not only great but could have been a meal in itself.
Next we moved on to our main course. We tried the grilled pork, chicken and steak on a stick. All were tender and juicy and practically fell off the skewer. We decided to order both a chicken and steak pita so we could share. Each was served in soft, flavorful pita bread, offered with steak or chicken marinated with olive oil, lemon, oregano, and served with tomatoes, onions and shaved lettuce. All this was topped with their amazing tsaziki sauce and it was mouth-watering.
Finally, we ended our meal with YiaYia’s homemade yogurt dessert and baklava.Made from scratch, the baklava was sweet and gooey and filled with nuts and honey and it was magnificent.YiaYia’s yogurt was served like a sundae. The creamy homemade yogurt was combined with honey and walnuts and topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. It was heavenly. As a special treat they brought out Greek cookies called kourabiethes that were dusted in powdered sugar and melted in your mouth. What a wonderful way to finish off our evening.
Jimmy’s has a wide variety of choices on the menu. For people who are looking for a meatless dish, there are salads, steak fries, feta cheese wedges, spinach pies, tsaziki and even a veggie pita. Also included in the menu are chicken wings, hot dogs, and pita burgers. The Greek burger offers Black Angus beef wrapped in a toasted pita and stuffed with shaved lettuce, tomatoes, onions, parsley and feta cheese. The prices are terrific and the food is superb. The restaurant is located at 2500 N. Federal Hwy. in Lighthouse Point. You may call ahead for takeout @ 954-781-4649.Delivery service will be available soon. Please be sure to treat yourself and your whole family to all that Jimmy the Greeks has to offer. You will be very happy that you did!
